Mrs. Juanita “Jo” Keys Hess–lnternationally known sculptor, died on November 13 at a local hospital. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and has lived in Mobile since 1941.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Morrell Hess; two children, Linda Hess Cooper (Angus) of Point Clear, Alabama and Charles Morrell Hess, Jr. (Trudy) of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren, Leigh O’Gwynn Farnell and John Coleman O’Gwynn, IV; and two great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Collier Farnell.
Mrs. Hess began her artistic career as a painter, but much later in life became fascinated by all forms of sculpture. Many of her sculpture creations grace the city of Mobile, revealing her belief that if a city contains and displays many works of art, it shows that its people love the city and want to make it beautiful. As a result of Mrs. Hess’ love for art and sculpturing, the Jo Hess Sculpture Foundation is being established to provide a permanent legacy for her.
Visitation will take place in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Parish House, at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15, followed by a memorial service in the church at 1:30 P.M. There will be a brief graveside service at Spring Hill Cemetery immediately following the memorial service. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Bro Baur, Dr. Jack Bender, David Cooper, John Darby, John Coleman O’Gwynn IV, Jake Huffstutler, Dr. Leon McVay, George K. Noland, Dr. E.M. Toler, and Dr. William Wright.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Jo Hess Sculpture Foundation, care of Linda H. Cooper, P.O.
