The sculpture of a four-year old girl, barefoot and in rolled-up dungarees, holding a flower pot and a trowel, was Jo Hess’ most popular creation. She named the piece ‘April’ to signify youth, springtime, and planting a garden. Also because most children like to play with dirt.
Jo used several models and took dozens of photographs. She wanted to get every detail of the small child’s beautiful form exactly right.
